The Ministers for European Affairs will be meeting in the Convent of São Francisco in Coimbra on 17 May at 14h30 (local time). The informal meeting will be chaired by the Portuguese Secretary of State for European Affairs, Ana Paula Zacarias, under the scope of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU).
The 27 ministers will watch a presentation on the EU’s outermost regions (ORs) as laboratories for the future, which will explain the challenges and potential of these regions for Europe as a whole, but also the lessons that can be learnt in order to prepare the future of the EU in areas such as sustainability, the digital transition and youth.
The agenda for the meeting includes the ministerial launch of the EU Foresight Network. This new initiative is aimed at boosting the prospective analysis capability of the Member States and the European Commission in the face of major challenges, trends and opportunities, reinforcing their capacity for planning, designing and applying more appropriate public policies in the long term and across Europe.
This event will also host the first political meeting of the Foresight Network, where the “Ministers for the Future” will discuss the EU's open strategic autonomy and European resilience, topics identified as vital to the future of Europe. A press conference is scheduled for 18h45 (local time).
