European Council agrees with strategy for combating COVID-19 pandemic

22 Jan · 11h00

The leaders of the 27 Member States met with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, by video conference yesterday to discuss a coordinated response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The European Council unanimously agreed to prepare a recommendation that establishes a common framework for the use of rapid antigen tests and mutual recognition of the COVID-19 tests all over the European Union. This recognition must be carried out by certified health bodies in order to facilitate cross-border tracking, treatment and movement of contacts.

The leaders believe this is a fundamental instrument to help mitigate the spread of the virus and contribute to the smooth functioning of the internal market.
